TOPIC: What is the False Claims Act? How does a qui tam case work?

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THIS CLE PRESENTATION WITH ASSISTANT UNITED STATES ATTORNEYS JAMES A. WEINKLE AND SUSAN TORRES SPEAKING ON THE FALSE CLAIMS ACT AND RECENT FEDERAL DEVELOPMENTS. Qui tam lawsuits are a type of civil lawsuit whistleblowers bring under the False Claims Act, a law that rewards whistleblowers if their qui tam cases recover funds for the Government. Qui tam cases are a powerful way for whistleblowers to help the government stop many kinds of fraud affecting vital government programs in areas such as Medicare and Medicaid, mortgage and housing, education, defense, small business procurement, veterans’ affairs and many other programs.  The impact is significant. In Fiscal Year 2015 alone, the Department of Justice recovered over $2,000,000,000 in qui tam and non-qui tam matters while Relator share awards which are calculated on the portion of the settlement or judgment attributable to the relator’s claims amounted to over $355,000,000.
