2012 Law Day Program

As in past years, the MBBA’s 2012 Law Day program was a terrific success, thanks to our volunteer speakers and contest judges.

Our attorneys visited the schools that feed into Miami Beach Senior High School, instructing students on the ABA’s Law Day theme this year, “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.” Between our attorney speakers and the children’s teachers, the students obtained the foundations they needed to draw posters and write essays for our annual contest.

On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, we commemorated Law Day by having the winners in eight categories (and their parents) join us at a festive luncheon held at the Texas de Brazil Restaurant. The bright and colorful venue, overlooking the Miami Beach Marina, was a lovely backdrop for our program, which featured Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara J. Pariente as our keynote speaker. Antonio Mora, of CBS-4 News, “anchored” our program as Master of Ceremonies. Also joining at the dais was former Florida Senator Alex Villalobos, Chief Judge Joel Brown, MBBA President Jodie Breece, and Law Day Co-Chairs Bruce Reich and Michael Gongora.

Justice Pariente spoke on the court funding crisis, out-of state efforts to unseat justices in the merit retention vote to be held in November, and how the Law Day theme speaks to the results of such events.

We are ever grateful to Bruce Reich for coordinating the program, and to Michael Gongora for coordinating the luncheon. Their boundless energy and time are sincerely appreciated.
